The Bricklayer

I began my career as a bricklayer on the 29th of June of 1984. I remember the date because it was the day my uncle brought me to Lagos from Abeokuta to work for him. I was in tears when my father broke the news to me. I’m the first of 4 children so I was always responsible for my younger ones. After primary school, I left for an army secondary school but dropped out after my first year due to insufficient funds. I learnt carpentry for the first year but I wasn’t making enough so my father thought it would be in my best interest to move to Lagos to be a bricklayer. The worst day of my life as a bricklayer was when I worked on a site in Ajah back in 2001 and the client accused me of stealing construction materials. The police was later involved and I got into a lot of trouble. Down the line the client’s brother-in-law was revealed as the culprit. But by this time my image was already tarnished.
