The Need For Internships

IMG_5902

People go to school with the expectation of securing a job after graduation, but there are no jobs. Hundreds of thousands of individuals graduate yearly only to stay at home due to insufficient white collar jobs. If everyone is expecting to have a white collar job, years from now who is going to be the mechanics, vulcanisers, carpenters, bricklayers etc. We need to encourage them to be apprentices. Back in my day as an apprentice, there were about 15 apprentices and many more who wanted our spot at the apprentice school but couldn’t due to lack of space. But now, it’s a struggle getting a teenager/young adult to become an apprentice. Everyone wants a bank job. There’re no more jobs out there. It’s now a time of operation do-it-by-yourself.
I’m in my 50’s and plan to retire soon but unfortunately there’s no one to leave the business to. People fail to realize apprentices grow up to be innovators and shapers of the world. As a mechanic I build several machines which I end up selling. I’m not saying people shouldn’t go to school, I just believe they should be able combine education and apprenticeship. They’d learn more that way. Who knows, years from now Nigeria could be manufacturing its own cars and aircraft
