Nigerian universities and unnecessary strikes go hand in hand. It’s quite frustrating having to spend 6-7 years in university for a degree that would normally take 4 years. There’s a long list of things that could trigger a university strike these days and it ranges from unpaid staff wages – the most common – to student protest. The last strike which took place a few months back was instigated by insufficient water supply (both drinking and bathing water) at the university. The students revolted, resulting in the school shutting down for almost a month.
One month might seem small but it adds up over time. The more strikes we have the longer we have to stay in school. Imagine graduating at the age of 24/25, only to start NYSC which will then take another year, and then go searching for graduate jobs, majority of whom specify that only those younger than 25 years of age are eligible to apply. It’s very unfair. Not everyone can afford to school abroad or private universities where all these things don’t happen.
