The Aspiring Butcher

“Being a butcher isn’t really what I aspired to be growing up. While in secondary school, I was in the social-science class and my ambition then was to become a newscaster. However, fate has something else in store for me. Sponsoring my three older brothers through university made my parents broke. So when it was my turn to enroll into the tertiary institution I had no financial backing. Staying at home was killing so I decided to join my father, who is a butcher. Since then, I have grown to like being a butcher because it sort of gives me fulfillment and it allows me to make contributions to my family. It might sound funny but the fact is I no longer want to be a newscaster. I believe I will become successful if I am focused, hardworking and innovative enough. Although I didn’t get the chance to become university educated, I want to be able to raise my own family such that my children will be able to go to school, study and become greater things in life. My name is Sodiq, I am an indigene of Ibadan and I am 24 years old”
