A few weeks ago The Lagos Hustle came across a school hidden deep in the slums of Ilaje, Bariga, Lagos called The Bright Achievers School. The school which is free for all was the idea of Mr. Sulaimon & Mr. Oshoala. According to the founders, the idea for the school was birthed out of the frustration of seeing kids who are supposed to be in school, playing around due to circumstances beyond their control. Such circumstances include the water-logged nature of the area preventing the kids from attending school, female kids who were not allowed to go to school because they are female or the mere fact that their parents could not simply afford to send them to school.
According to Mr. Sulaimon & Mr Oshoala, ‘Our mission is to be a top-tier school within the state and beyond. We want to produce students that can compete with students from schools from around the country. We want to instill that self-confidence in them so that they are able to approach anyone from any school without fear. We no longer want them to feel just because they are from the ghetto they can’t achieve much’.
They lay equal emphasis on education, art and sports! According to them those 3 things are very crucial and they encourage students to pick up at least one sport and one art training when joining the school, and have synergy with all 3. All their teachers, art instructors and coaches are volunteers whom the founders are eternally grateful to. They have a football and volleyball coach, they participate in athletics and compete in educational, sports and arts competitions around within the state.
It is such a great thing these people are doing and we felt the need to share on our page. Here are some of the photos we took during our visit.
More stories on the school and founders to follow.
